COMMENTARY: WHAT WILL THE CRITICS ACCEPT AS EVIDENCE? The Scole Report, written by investigators Montague Keen, David Fontana, and Arthur Ellis, was published in the Proceedings of the Society for Psychical Research (Vol. 54 Pt. 220). It is a detailed, 450-page scientific report on the series of paranormal experiments conducted in Scole, Norfolk, England, between 1995 and 1997, and in more than 1,000 documented sessions in multiple countries with impeccable witnesses. It supports the authenticity of afterlife communication through physical mediumship.
In an article published two years after The Scole Report, Montague Keen, the lead investigator, showed his frustration with the response to that Report by mainstream scientists and parapsychologists. Even though they had not been able to provide any evidence of fraud or answer Keen's challenge to duplicate the phenomena under similar conditions, the critics kept speculating that the spectacular results could have been fraudulent.
Keen wrote: "What is depressing about the critics is their willingness to construct an upturned pyramid of hypotheses and speculations, all balanced on one improbable assumption after another. What is so remarkable is their unwillingness to accept the oft-repeated challenge to take the scientifically warranted course of viewing all the evidence together, rather than attempting to pick theoretical holes in every individual item".
WHY DO SOME INVESTIGATORS REFUSE TO ACCEPT PHYSICAL MEDIUMSHIP? Physical mediumship is a contradiction to everything we logically know. Tables don't normally float, objects don't drop out of the air,
voices of our dead loved ones, independent of the medium, don't shout loud enough to be heard and recorded, people don't materialise and walk across the rooms so that you can hear their steps and feel that their hands are missing a finger as when alive. When these things happen in physical mediumship,
the first thought of everyone is that it has to be fraudulent. All investigators begin with this supposition, but the careful ones work systematically to eliminate every possibility of deception.
MONTAGUE KEEN PRINCIPAL SCOLE INVESTIGATOR
Montague Keen was a brilliant psychic researcher, journalist, agricultural administrator, magazine editor, and farmer. He had been a member of the Council of the Society for Psychical Research for 55 years, chairman of its Image and Publicity Committee, and secretary of its Survival Research Committee. Part of his role was to investigate physical mediumship. As part of his investigations, he and his wife had a sitting with physical medium David Thompson in London shortly Montague died. He wrote a very thorough and favourable report.
At its conclusion, he wrote:
"It is almost an article of faith among many psychical researchers that unless physical phenomena are capable of being clearly witnessed, or alternatively that infra-red video recording is available, no persuasive evidence of anything paranormal is possible...[However,] the general rule of evidentiality may be broken if the other security measures justify an unambiguous assertion that deception on the part of the medium was impossible."

He walked across the room and talked with Scole experimenters Robin and Sandra Foy, who were present, and with his friend, long-time afterlife researcher Guy Playfair. THE BRILLIANT PHYSICAL MEDIUMSHIP OF ALEC HARRIS Alec Harris was a superb Welsh materialization medium who died in 1974. During the production of materialized spirit forms, Alec's spirit guides usually took him into a deep trance, and the sitters were able to see him clearly sitting on his chair (bound hand and foot) inside the 'cabinet' - and the whole room was bathed in good red light while the materialized people walked around the room and spoke with their loved ones. The following witness statements are contained in the book 'Alec Harris The Full Story of his Remarkable Physical Mediumship' by Alec's wife, Louie Harris.
Maurice Barbanell, the then editor of Psychic News, wrote of Alec's mediumship that "the spirit forms not only show themselves in good red light, but they also hold sustained conversations, after having walked about ten feet from the cabinet! At a sitting I attended, I saw thirty forms materialize during two and a half hours".
Sir Alexander Cannon, 'spoke to two spirit forms who were Tibetans, and these conversations were held in their native tongue, which was unknown to Alec Harris or any of the other persons present'. Prof. T J Haarhoff, who was a professor of classics, "conversed with a materialized spirit who spoke to him in ancient Greek".
Mr. A.G. Fletcher-Desborough, an expert magician who was an arch-skeptic attended a sitting. "As he reported later in the Liverpool Evening Express 'as an illusionist and magician, I knew exactly where to look for such things as panel and floor escapes, ceiling and wall slides. I was satisfied that nothing could make an exit or entrance in any way. There was no chance of deception'. What followed was nothing short of miraculous. The skeptic's dead father materialized and used a pet name known to nobody but his family. His brother materialized giving his name and walking with a limp as he did in life. In 1948, in a seance in Tuscany, Italy, a direct voice medium channelled a spirit who was not known to the medium or anyone present. He said he was a priest who had been shot by one of his parishioners in Canton, Ohio, USA. In 1987, Dr. Ian Stevenson from the University of Virginia followed up on the case and found that Father Joseph Riccardi had been murdered in his church in Canton, Ohio, in 1929. Over the past two years, a group of educators has been exploring how consciousness can be meaningfully integrated into education across a range of contexts—from universities to community-based programs.
In this 90-minute session, The Gallileo Commission will spotlight four educators, who will share what they have been developing in practice, and what is changing as a result. Their work offers concrete examples of how consciousness can be introduced in ways that are both grounded and applicable.
