COMMENTARY: WHAT IS PHYSICAL MEDIUMSHIP AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? When spirit people use a medium to produce phenomena that can be seen, heard or felt by everyone present, the medium is called a physical medium. This kind of mediumship includes materialisation of spirit bodies, voices seeming to come from mid-air, faces of loved ones transfigured over the face of the medium, and the movement of tables and other objects.
Today it is extremely rare, and many people, even committed Spiritualists, have never heard of it or think it was all trickery. But between about 1850 and 1930 it was the primary form of mediumship which was designed to offer material evidence that spirits existed and could interact with the physical world — things people could see, hear, or touch directly.
Phenomena such as table-tipping, levitation, materialized hands or full-figure apparitions, rapping sounds, and the movement of objects were interpreted as spirits asserting their presence in a dramatic, undeniable way. For bereaved relatives, what can be more evidential than witnessing physical manifestations of a deceased loved one — a materialized face, a recognizable voice, or an object associated with them?
Some of the greatest scientists who ever lived investigated it and declared it genuine and we have been left with incredible accounts of their experiences. These give us evidence and practical reassurance that the afterlife exists.
But apart from evidence of survival,
physical mediumship at its best has given us understanding of the Greater Reality from spirits who are already in the afterlife - see Riley Heagerty's book The Hereafter.
