COMMENTARY: PAST LIVES?
When we first began investigating the afterlife in the late 1980s, the idea of reincarnation was highly controversial. It was a very popular topic in New Age circles but ordinary people in the West made fun of it. Spiritualists largely rejected it, unlike the Spiritists in France and Brazil who had embraced reincarnation since Alan Kardec's The Spirits' Book in 1857.
Many Spiritualists consider it a cruel teaching, imagining that it means that when we die we could find that our loved ones have reincarnated and are out of reach. Many spirit communicators claimed that they had never met anyone who remembered having been reincarnated.
In recent times, evidence suggests that some kind of reincarnation takes place. We now have very large numbers of well-documented cases based on:
1) children who remember past lives
2) dreams of past lives
3) past-life regressions
4) between-life regressions
5) pre-birth memories
6) learning about previous lives during an NDE or OBE
7) traumas from past lives healed with regessions
8)
child prodigies
9)
teachings from influential mediums and teachers
10) psychiatrists finding the key to phobias and illnesses in past life events and relationships.
At the same time, there has also been a movement toward the belief that we are multi-dimensional beings and that the past, present, and future are all happening at the same time. Some even claim to have been able to access simultaneous current lives as well as future lives.
THIS LIFE - PAST LIFE
In 'This Life, Past Life' Dr. Keith Parsons examines the evidence for past lives and reincarnation. Specifically he looks at three 'hypnosis' cases with veridical evidence. This indicates they cannot be based simply on fantasy. He also examines the spontaneous past life memories of small children, with reference to the work of the late Professor Ian Stevenson of the University of Virginia, and in particular to a BBC documentary on his work made in 1992. WOULD A BELIEF IN REINCARNATION INCREASE PEACE? This was the argument of the late Dr. Walter Semkiw M.D. who started researching reincarnation in 1995 and wrote several outstanding books on the subject. His excellent website contains details of many fascinating reincarnation cases and argues:
“As reincarnation research shows we can change religion, nationality and race from one lifetime to another, evidence of reincarnation will help us transcend tribal mindset and bring greater world peace.What will end these endless cycles of violence? Evidence of reincarnation will.”
DID JENNY COCKELL FIND HER PAST LIFE FAMILY?
Jenny Cockell, an English woman born in 1953, claimed to have vivid memories of a past life as Mary Sutton, an Irish woman who lived in early 20th-century Ireland. From age four, she experienced recurring dreams and memories of being Mary, a working-class mother who died young, leaving behind eight children in poverty. Some of her children thought it might have been their mother working from spirit through Jenny to bring the family together.

You have heard me say many times that the personality expressed on earth is only a fragment of the total individuality. I have compared it to facets of a large diamond. Facets can incarnate and others can reincarnate".

DR. JIM TUCKER SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE OF REBIRTH
Children can have verifiable past life memories that can be independently corroborated. They can present specific names, places, and events that they never had a chance to know about. The specifics can be confirmed by going back years in the public records. Birthmarks and birth defects can show up at the place in the body of the child claiming to be reincarnated where wounds caused their often violent or traumatic death in their past life.
PAST LIFE MEMORIES THROUGH DREAMS In 1962 Mrs Smith went to Dr. Arthur Guirdham M.D. in a hospital's outpatient department, where he worked as a psychiatrist. She was seeking treatment for a recurring nightmare which she experienced occasionally since her teens, but was now coming two or three times a week. Although Dr. Guirdham remained calm and professional, he had to hide his surprise while listening to his new patient because he had been having the same nightmare for more than 30 years.
