Dr. PMH Atwater, LHD, passed away peacefully at her home in Virginia on July 10, 2026, aged 88. She leaves behind an incredible legacy as a courageous pioneer researcher, author, and spiritual seeker who touched countless lives around the world.
Born Phyllis Marie DeKeyser, she was a devoted mother and later a secretary and a journalist as well. In 1977, she died three separate times in the span of three months, experiencing profound near-death states. She experienced a lot of criticism and ridicule when she first went public in a pamphlet, I Died Three Times in 1977 – The Complete Story, with her experiences that were not understood at the time.
Determined to understand what happened to her, she conducted interviews with nearly 5,000 adult and child near-death experiences, authoring over 20 books in 12 languages in 27 published volumes. Coming Back to Life, Future Memory, and We Live Forever laid the early groundwork for verified clinical and medical studies worldwide. She was the first near-death researcher to contend that the experience changed the brain's physiology, actually altering its structure.
