COMMENTARY: BRAZILIAN SPIRITISM HAS GIVEN US SOME EXTRAORDINARY MEDIUMS Most of our readers would be familiar with the incredible work of Chico Xavier and Divaldo Franco, not just as incredible mediums but also for their example of lifelong dedication to service. In that tradition is José Medrado, a physical medium who has devoted his life since the age of 17 to helping children and disadvantaged communities in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.
José Medrado has many mediumistic gifts including clairvoyance, clairaudience, deep trance speaking, healing, and automatic writing, but, as we mentioned last week, he is best known for trance painting and trance sculpture. There are several videos of him going into a trance and allowing a group of painters, under the direction of Renoir, to complete wonderful paintings in a matter of minutes. Here's one example. Renoir made it clear to Medrado when they started to work together that if even one cent of the money that came from the paintings was used for anything except service to the poor, the painters would stop working with him.
While working full-time, he has used his mediumistic gifts to create a model community centre Citade da Luz with a staff of 22 people and 200 volunteers. 1500 people a month access free health care, 300 children receive free education, 500 families a month engage in cultural activities and 100 homeless people per week access food, clothes, fresh showers as well as health and spiritual support from volunteers staffing the community bus.
RAISING FUNDS FOR THE CITY OF LIGHT
Inge Crosson explains why Medrado unexpectedly needs some extra help to comply with new fire regulations that require work costing R$150,000 ($45,000 AUD or $30,000 US) to be completed by the end of 2024. Otherwise all the programs at the City of Light will have to close (something that may please those made uncomfortable by Medrado's stance against corruption and greed). Carl Sagan was an American astronomer and science writer famous for co-writing and narrating "Cosmos" a thirteen-part, 1980-1981 television series. He was also very involved with space exploration and with SETI - the Search for Extraterrestial Life.
