COMMENTARY: SPIRITUALISM AND SPIRITISM - WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? Both Spiritism and Spiritualism provide huge reservoirs of spiritual wisdom and evidence of the afterlife and have been vitally important to humanity's spiritual evolution.
Both agree that we continue to live on after physical death in a very solid spirit world. Both believe in psychic, or paranormal abilities, like clairvoyance, that make it possible for gifted psychics and mediums to see what is invisible to most people. Both believe that spiritual healing has many forms and can have a very positive impact on physical health.
Spiritism had a single founder, Allan Kardec and
has its own set of books and teachings (see next item). Reincarnation is central to its beliefs and there is a lot of emphasis on service to the poor. Spiritist mediums generally hold a job and donate money received from their mediumship to charitable causes. There is not so much emphasis on proving survival (it is accepted as a given) and its focus is more on giving organised communal support to those who want to evolve spiritually.
Spiritualism has been strongest in English-speaking countries, especially in the United Kingdom, USA, and Canada. Spiritist Centers are in many countries, but most are located in the Phillippines and in Brazil. Over 20-40 million Brazilians use the Spiritist Community Centers when they need help with physical illness or psychological issues. There are 50 Spiritist Psychiatric Hospitals in Brazil that combine spiritual healing with conventional psychiatry.
THE FOUNDATION OF SPIRITISM In France, Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail investigated mediums between 1854 and 1856. He compiled a list of questions about the spirit world and about the purpose of life that he put to spirits who seemed highly evolved. In 1857, using the pen name Allan Kardec, he published The Spirits' Book, comprising a series of 1,018 answers to these questions. This was followed by The Mediums' Book(1861); The Gospel According to Spiritism (1864); Heaven and Hell(1865); and Genesis – Miracles and Predictions According to Spiritism (1868). These books became the foundation of Spiritism.

SPEACTACULAR BRAZILIAN MEDIUMSHIP
Luiz Antonio Gasparetto (1948-2018) grew up in a Spiritist family in Brazil. His mother Zibia practiced psychography (automatic writing) and eventually published books of spirit communications. Luiz was able to go into trance and, in darkness, paint in the style of a wide range of famous dead painters (Monet, Picasso, Rembrandt, da Vinci, Modigliani, Manet, van Gogh, Gauguin, etc). In one demonstration he did four paintings at once: one with each hand, one with each bare foot (these being done under the table at which he was seated), while his eyes were closed and he carried on a conversation. Each of the four paintings was by a different spirit artist and in four distinct styles that an art expert related to the named artists.

THE SLOW AND STEADY GATHERING OF SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE The Leonora Piper-Pelham Communications (1892-1897) provide some of the best evidence of the existence of the afterlife. Mrs Piper's mental and trance mediumship was scientifically tested and proved remarkably consistent and enduring. The Society for Psychical Research conducted many hundreds of sittings over twenty years with the patient and ever-willing Mrs Piper. Details and commentary on these experiments were reported regularly in the Proceedings of the SPR, the Society's journal. These reports are part of the permanent library of the SPR and are available to interested researchers. Michael Tymn wrote a book about this most scientifically tested medium in history. NEW AUSTRALIAN RESEARCH INTO IADC THERAPY
Many of our readers are aware of the enormous potential of IADC therapy as featured in Dr. Allan Botkin's work. It harnesses the power of EMDR and helps clients reduce grief and be open to after-death communications. Recently the film "Life With Ghosts" by Stephen Berkley, featured the first controlled trial of IADC Therapy conducted by Professor Jan Holden and colleagues at the University of North Texas.
Dr Tom Nehmy, Director of Healing Grief International and Principal Psychologist at healinggriefwithiadc.com has now commenced a research study for 2023-24 through the School of Psychology at the University of Adelaide.
