COMMENTARY: FACING UNEXPECTED DEATH
With the tragic death of five men aboard the Titan submersible a few days ago, we are reminded once again of the unforgettable story of the slow sinking of the Titanic, vividly depicted in a huge number of cinematic films, documentaries, and television programs.
As Michael Tymn puts it in his highly recommended book "Transcending The Titanic", the story has a grip on the popular imagination as a microcosm of life. We have the opulence of first class and the ordinariness of steerage class, with a middle or second class in between - all vibrantly alive and unexpectedly forced to confront death. "Every type of emotion, mind-set, virtue and vice are represented - love and fear, hope and despair, bravery and cowardice, arrogance and humbleness, pomp and shame, selfishness and brotherhood".
What makes the book so valuable to us is the way Michael contrasts the reaction of someone on the Titanic who was spiritually prepared for death with those who were not. He describes the calm and selfless behaviour of the famous Spiritualist and humanitarian, newspaper editor William T. Stead. And he follows this up with Stead's own account of what happened to him immediately after the sinking - "a short, sharp struggle to gain his breath, and immediately afterwards he came to his senses in another state of existence".

In the weeks after the sinking, William Stead
came through at least eight different mediums and materialized on many occasions, giving detailed proofs of his identity that were accepted by his daughter and close friends. He wrote a book through automatic writing in which he described everything that happened after the sinking, including the behavior of many of the wealthy passengers who did not realize they were dead and whose only concern was their possessions. Michael Tymn also recounts after-death communications by John Jacob Astor (who went down with the Titanic) and Alfred Vanderbilt (who died on the Lusitania in 1915). They were two of the world's richest men and were not prepared for death. Apparently, they had a great deal of trouble after they died. Astor complained "Why did no one ever tell me these things? A SAD FOOTNOTE IN HISTORY James Cameron's movie Titanic portrayed the wonderful couple Isidor and Ida Straus, owners of Macy's department store, who stayed together rather than taking offered places on a lifeboat. Read their remarkable story. By a srange twist of fate, their great-great- granddaughter, Wendy Rush, was married to OcenGate CEO, Stockton Rush, who was the pilot of the Titan submersible that imploded killing everyone on board.

PAST LIFE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN TWINS In his investigation of children who remember past lives, Ian Stevenson (pictured) came upon 40 sets of twins.
