COMMENTARY: THE $ VALUE OF EMPATHY AND COMPASSION Healthcare administrators are driven by the bottom line, and often the patient-provider relationship is not given the value that patients expect. So it's fascinating that we now have hard evidence of something that should be self-evident: that there are huge health and economic benefits when providers communicate with empathy and compassion.
Research cited by Stephen Trzeciak M.D. and Anthony Mazzarelli M.D. the authors of Compassionomics-The Revolutionary Evidence that Caring Makes a Difference shows that with compassionate communication by healthcare providers:
"The likelihood that a diabetic patient has optimal blood-sugar control is 80 percent higher and odds are 41 percent lower the patient will experience serious complications related to the disease.

Patients are less likely to utilize excessive health care services and, on average, have lower medical bills by about 50 percent.

Patients recover more quickly from the symptoms that brought them to the doctor, and have fewer visits, tests, and referrals.

PROFESSOR SIMON THORPE ARGUES THAT PARANORMAL PHENOMENA SHOULD BE STUDIED SCIENTIFICALLY Professor Thorpe, the CNRS (French National Research Center) Director of Research for the Brain and Cognition Research Center at the University of Toulouse, talks about paranormal data obtained by Rupert Sheldrake which is ignored by materialist scientists.
PSYCHIC LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS
It would be wonderful to see more experiments like this EEG analysis that American Professor Charles H. Hapgood reports in his excellent book, Voices of Spirit (1975). He claimed that he tested medium Elwood Babbitt to see if the electroencephalograph (EEG) of the medium when out of trance would be different from when the medium's mind was allegedly taken over and controlled by intelligences from the afterlife.
Hapgood took EEGs of Babbitt while three different intelligences were allegedly in control of the medium. The EEGs of each of the three were found to be completely different from each other and from the EEG of Babbitt not in trance. An EEG expert, Dr. Bridge, noticed that the EEGs were characteristic of people of different physical ages and could not belong to the one person. Hapgood reproduces the EEG diagrams in his book (1975: 224-227).

PRE-BIRTH EXPERIENCE: LIFE BEFORE BIRTH, THE SPIRIT OF GOD, CHOICE AND THE VEIL Christian Sundberg claims to be able to remember his existence before coming to Earth. This pre-birth memory left him completely after childhood and spontaneously returned 10 years ago when Christian took up a meditation practice and experienced a personal awakening journey. While remembering pre-birth memories, Christian began to have Out-of-Body Experiences (OBEs). Christian is the author of “A Walk in the Physical,” exploring the larger spiritual context in which we exist and the importance of love on our human journey.
THE IMPORTANCE OF DEATHBED VISIONS In his 1994 book Parting Visions, Dr. Melvin Morse claimed that:
• Family members who know about the visions of the dying are known to spend more time at the dying person's bedside.
• Spiritual visions empower the dying patients making them realize that they have something to share with others.
• Spiritual visions remove all fear of dying in the patient and are enormously healing to the relatives.
• These visions can prevent burnout on the part of nurses and doctors.
• If attended to, the visions can dramatically reduce wasteful medical procedures that are often painful to the patient. He points out that 30-60% of the American health care dollar is spent in the last few days of a person's life, and 'most of it is spent in useless procedures that do nothing to prolong life'. (Morse 1994: 136).
THE PADGETT MESSAGES
James Padgett was a devout Methodist lawyer, based in Washington D.C. whose wife Helen died in February 1914. He decided to try to contact her and learned that he could receive automatic writing. He did receive communications from his wife and then from historical figures and spiritual masters. By the time he died in 1923, he had received 1,200 messages.
