COMMENTARY: WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM HISTORIC SPIRITUALISM? These days many people who are interested in the afterlife don't identify as Spiritualists or even understand the important part that Spiritualism has played in humanity's understanding of what really happens when you die.
The National Spiritualist Association of Churches (NSAC) founded in 1883 is one of the oldest and largest of the national Spiritualist church organizations in the United States. It has an excellent website that examines the contribution of Spiritualism as a science, a philosophy, and as a religion.
It defines a Spiritualist as one who believes in the communication between this and the Spirit World by means of mediumship and who endeavors to mold his or her character and conduct in accordance with the highest teachings derived from such communication.
The emphasis on "highest teachings" is something that all of us can learn from. The early home circles emphasized commitment and harmony, an absence of ego, and dedication to selfless service. Perhaps, as a result, the movement was strong and the evidence that came through the many brilliant physical and trance mediums of the day was spectacular.
But the Spirit World is aware of conditions on Earth and is always evolving new forms of contact. Back in 1980 when Gordon HIgginson was speaking with Silver Birch about the lack of mediums coming through Spiritualism he was told the following:
"You talk about the lack of mediums. There are sufficient mediums for the services that are to be performed at this stage of your evolution. As people are ready to receive, so more mediums will be provided. They will not necessarily come within the purview of your organisation or any other. They may be in home circles, or individuals working on their own. They may not even call themselves Spiritualists, mediums, psychics, or even sensitives. But the label does not matter; the service is important".Read their full discussion.
BRILLIANT BOOKS ON HISTORIC SPIRITUALISM N. Riley Heagerty has been researching Historic Spiritualism and Mediumship for over 3 decades and has concentrated on the physical phenomena attending the great mediums who manifested their gifts within what he refers to as the “Century of Wonders ” between 1848 and 1948.
According to Mr. Heagerty, “That century produced mind-staggering manifestations witnessed on numerous occasions by individuals whose integrity would be an insult to question. We have been given countless instances of positive proof of not only life after death but direct communication by spirits. It is also a sad fact that the world, in general, is woefully unaware of these titanic events which, if understood, would change the course of human thinking.” Read more.

As well Maurice Barbanell's This is Spiritualism looks at the best of the evidence in the United Kingdon, and Guy Lyon Playfair's The Flying Cow shares his experiences in Brazil.
OVERWHELMING ACCEPTANCE
One thing that we do have today that is having a huge impact on the acceptance of the afterlife is a very significant number of Near-Death Experiences. Many of these give people direct experience of the "higher teachings" of spirit and lead them to change their lives profoundly. In this video Evan Mecham, a successful businessman and retired major in the US Air Force Reserve, describes the impact of his NDE.
DR. ELISABETH KUBLER-ROSS ON THE NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE The point Dr. Kübler-Ross makes in this short video is that once people have had an intense NDE they will be absolutely convinced that life continues after death.
NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES VALIDATED BY AN EXPERT Bruce Greyson, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia, has studied near-death experiences for more than 45 years and is one of the world’s leading experts on their science and significance.
IMPORTANT RESEARCH ARTICLE ON PSYCHIC PHENOMENA "American Psychologist" is the flagship journal of the American Psychological Association many of whose members have been fiercely skeptical of psychic phenomena (psi). So it is interesting that it published: "The experimental evidence for parapsychological phenomena: A review".
The article concludes: "The evidence provides cumulative support for the reality of psi, which cannot be readily explained away by the quality of the studies, fraud, selective reporting, experimental or analytical incompetence, or other frequent criticisms. The evidence for psi is comparable to that for established phenomena in psychology and other disciplines, although there is no consensual understanding of them." RESOURCES ON SPIRITUAL HEALING A must-read classic reference book for any healer or teacher of the healing arts is Spiritual Healing: Scientific Validation of A Healing Revolution (Vol.1) by Canadian wholistic psychiatric psychotherapist Daniel J. Benor M.D. The author states that he was a skeptic, but that personal experiences and research have convinced him that spiritual healing exists and is a potent therapy. The book contains 124 scientific studies supporting various methods of spiritual healing. Dr. Benor has gone on to write two more volumes in the series, to edit the peer reviewed International Journal of Healing and Caring, and to write several other books on spiritual and holistic healing. "I DO LOVE TO WORK WITH DEAD PEOPLE"
Psychic medium, academic, and researcher Julia Assante Ph.D. talks about the relief experienced by people on the other side when they are able to connect with loved ones, how to recognise signs, and ways to make contact. Her webpage contains an excellent summary of "How to do After-death Communication". Julia conducts Skype and telephone readings and private sessions from her home in France.
HOW CAN I CONNECT WITH MY CHILD IN SPIRIT? Rev. Sheri Perl, author of the Grieving Parents' Handbook, (available as a free download on her website), writes: "I know that this is a terrible time for you and my heart goes out to you, knowing only too well how I felt, and sometimes still feel. However, I also want to tell you that I no longer doubt that Danny walks by my side and shares my life with me. It’s not the same, of course, because I can’t see him, but I do have an ongoing relationship with him and I believe that anyone who desires this, can do the same. What has been lost, can be found and as far as I am concerned, finding in the spirit what you have lost in the flesh, is the only real solace!" Read more.
