COMMENTARY: RELY ON YOUR OWN DISCERNMENT
Many of us who have had the privilege of sitting repeatedly with a genuine medium, or have had an NDE or OBE or direct contact with loved ones who have crossed over, know that we have received amazing evidence that life is eternal. And, once we begin to investigate, we find that millions of other people have had equally impressive direct evidence of the afterlife.
But as Michael Tymn points out, many in the academic community remain determined to ignore the evidence, no matter how impressive it is. He writes:
"Some esteemed men and women of science observed a particular medium on hundreds of occasions under conditions completely ruling out deception of any kind. And yet, other scientists concluded that fraud was the only explanation, primarily because everything they observed defied known natural law. Their careers would have been endangered had they subscribed to an unnatural or 'unscientific' explanation."
"Journalists and historians, wanting to appear intelligent and scientific, not as gullible fools buying into ridiculous 'religious' superstition and folly, usually aligned themselves with the debunkers, completely ignoring the controlled studies by some researchers and recording only the verdicts of the debunkers."
So today we say "well done" to all of those who have been able to withstand the hostility and disinformation of academia, fundamentalist religion, the mainstream media, and well-meaning relatives and rely on their own experience and discernment.
AL SULLIVAN IS CERTAIN HE WASN'T OUT OF HIS MIND
Al Sullivan was a 55 year old truck driver who was undergoing triple by-pass surgery when he had a powerful NDE. It included an encounter with his deceased mother and brother-in-law, who told Al to go back to tell one of his neighbors that their son with lymphoma would be OK. Furthermore, during the NDE, Al accurately noticed that the surgeon operating on him was flapping his arms in an unusual fashion, with his hands in his armpits. When he came back to his body after the surgery was over, the surgeon was startled that Al could describe his unique method of keeping his hands sterile.

Time has not eroded the validity of those cases and the research surrounding them, although popular internet references generally subscribe to the materialistic worldview and are biased heavily toward debunking them all while offering twisted, distorted, misleading, incomplete, and uninformed explanations. Indeed, many of the cases reported in this book are bizarre and exceed the normal boggle threshold, but it should be kept in mind that the scientists and scholars who reported on them did so after numerous observations, often under highly controlled conditions, and with their reputations on the line.
