COMMENTARY:
WHAT WILL THE CRITICS ACCEPT AS EVIDENCE? In an article published two years after The Scole Report, Montague Keen showed his frustration with the response to that Report by mainstream scientists and parapsychologists. Even though they had not been able to provide any evidence of fraud, or answer Keen's challenge to duplicate the phenomena under similar conditions, the critics kept speculating that the spectacular results could not have been genuine.
Keen wrote: "What is depressing about the critics is their willingness to construct an upturned pyramid of hypotheses and speculations, all balanced on one improbable assumption after another. What is so remarkable is their unwillingness to accept the oft-repeated challenge to take the scientifically warranted course of viewing all the evidence together, rather than attempting to pick theoretical holes in every individual item".
He concluded "It is unwise to under-estimate, or be contemptuous about, the strength of belief systems which cling like limpets to our consciousness, or to imagine that a constant inundation of evidence of the paranormal will shift their attitudes. Only when scientists as a body find themselves forced to confront and explain evidence so overpoweringly impressive that to ignore it is a clear sign of intellectual cowardice, will progress be made".
"But", he said, "we're working on it. And when we get there, the historic contribution of the Scole Group to broadening the understanding of man about his spiritual as well as his physical environment will be recognised."

THE PLACEBO EFFECT
A placebo is used in clinical trials to test the effectiveness of treatments and is most often used in drug studies. For instance, people in one group get the actual drug, while the others receive an inactive drug or placebo. The participants in the clinical trial don’t know if they receive the real thing or the placebo. This way, the researchers can measure if the drug works by comparing how both groups react. If they both have the same reaction — improvement or not — the drug is deemed not to work.
