COMMENTARY: CHICO XAVIER - A WHITE CROW Professor William James, considered by some as the father of Psychology, was a dedicated follower of the paranormal and of mediumship. He is famous for saying “If you wish to upset the law that all crows are black, you mustn't seek to show that no crows are; it is enough if you prove one single crow to be white.” For him the white crow of mediumship was medium Leonora Piper.

Since his time there have been many other "white crows" in the history of mediumship research - brilliant mediums who passed every test. So it was good to be reminded this week by afterlife researcher Alberto Oyarvide that one of the winning essays in the Bigelow Essay Competition was Mediumship as the Best Evidence for the Afterlife: Francisco Candido Xavier, a White Crow. It's definitely worth reading.

The authors, Alexandre Caroli Rocha, Ph.D., Marina Weiler, Ph.D., and Raphael Fernandes Casseb, Ph.D., argue that Xavier’s work is particularly rich in providing objectively verifiable information that can be used to investigate whether or not his communication with the deceased was genuine. They claim that his work cannot be explained by the most common materialist hypotheses (conscious fraud, unconscious fraud, super-psi) and find that the only hypothesis that adequately fits the observations is the survival of the mind. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DIE? MOST INTERESTING In his book Life in the World Unseen, Hugh Benson (through medium Anthony Borgia) claims that while we can have houses on the astral level, we are free from the burdens of household duties.
"What is there to disturb the order of the house? There can be no dust because there is no decay of any sort whatsoever. There can be no dirt because here in spirit there is nothing to cause it. The household duties that are so very familiar and so very irksome on the earth plane are here non-existent. The necessity for providing the body with food was abandoned when we abandoned our physical body."



SHE REMEMBERS HER LIFE BEFORE BIRTH
Though only 24, Akerke Muratova has experienced much in her young life, including her parents' deaths, childhood abuse, attempted suicides, spiritual awakening, and out-of-body experiences. ALMOST FORGOTTEN PHYSICAL MEDIUMS FROM THE USA While many of our readers are familiar with the wonderful work of independent direct-voice medium Leslie Flint, few would have heard of the incredible Mrs Elizabeth Blake. Based in Ohio, USA, she worked non-stop for nearly sixty years, from 1860 to 1920. In that time it is claimed that she sat for more than 200,000 people. Fortunately, a comprehensive (over 200 page) record of her work has been preserved in the Proceedings of the American Society for Psychical Research (download a pdf copy). Except for her night circles, which she held usually when requested, she sat in broad daylight. N. Riley Heagarty has made available a record of her work in his wonderful book 'The Direct Voice'.



THE CASE OF FATHER GIUSEPPI RICCARDI
In 1948 in a seance in Tuscany Italy, a spirit came through a direct voice medium who was not known to the medium or anyone present. He said he was a priest who had been shot by one of his parishioners in Canton, Ohio. In 1987 Dr. Ian Stevenson from the University of Virginia followed the case up and found that Father Joseph Riccardi had been murdered in his church in Canton, Ohio in 1929. This is an excellent example of a 'drop-in communicator' who provides evidence that the information received by the medium is not coming from a sitter nor from any desire on the part of the medium.
