COMMENTARY: HOW CAN WE OVERCOME THE FEAR OF DYING?
We often hear from people who admit
that they are enormously frightened of dying. This
is a widely held fear in our death-denying society which
even has a name - thanatophobia.
While mainstream culture has little to offer people
who suffer from this fear, there are many resources
available for those who seek them out.

there is rejoicing in ours. Death usually means that
the life has served its purpose .... and the individual
is ready to enjoy all the tremendous richness and beauty
that the spirit life has to offer."
DURING HER NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE
NANCY RYNES LEARNED THE ART OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNICATION As a scientist, science writer, and corporate trainer, for over two decades Nancy Rynes was a scientific skeptic. She remained an atheist until her life-changing bicycling accident and near-death experience (NDE). She says that her NDE was so wonderful that she did not want to return to life. Her spirit friends laughed and told her she had already agreed to do so. They showed her something like a video of her pre-life planning session.
TALKING WITH NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCERS REDUCES FEAR OF DEATH Back in 2006, Dr. Kenneth Ring described research he had carried out with senior citizens, college students, and people who had contemplated suicide (see 'Lessons from the Light'). He found that watching videos of testimonials by people who had an NDE, talking to an experiencer, and reading about NDEs had the following effects:
1. A decrease in fear of death.
2. An increase in belief that the moment of death will be peaceful.
3. An increase in belief in life after death.
4. A decrease in belief that life after death will be unpleasant.
5. An increase in belief that one will be reunited with deceased loved ones.
6. An increased belief in God.
PATIENTS EXPERIENCE VISIONS OF LOVED ONES
BEFORE THEY DIE In all cultures, people who are dying are sometimes observed to start talking to loved ones who have already died in the days before they die. Some say that they can see beautiful places in the spirit world and hear beautiful music. Doctors and nurses working in hospice have incredible stories to share.
